Choosing Between Drapes and Curtains

Custom Drapery Los Angeles
Custom Drapery For Your Dining Room

Although many F&R Interiors customers here in the L.A. area use the terms “drapes” and “curtains” interchangeably, in fact, there are some differences between the two window treatments. If you’ve been thinking you want to round out a room with the softness of fabric, one of the styles might work great for you. But to understand which is better, first get a handle on the differences between the two. Check it out below, and be sure to speak with one of our specialists to see the treatments in person.

Fabric

If you look at one big difference only, it’s certainly the fabric. With drapes, you’ll see thicker fabrics such as velvet that are cut long—either all the way to the ground to puddle beneath the window or just to touch the ground (and sometimes, they’re hung from well higher than the window to add longer lines to the space). This all makes drapes a more formal window fashion, better for bedrooms or living rooms. On the flip side, curtains are made from lighter fabrics like cotton, and they’re cut shorter (usually at or just slightly below the windowsill). This gives curtains a more casual vibe, so they’re better suited to rooms like the kitchen or laundry room.

Function

If you want more natural light into your room and you’re not concerned about privacy, curtains could be your move. For more privacy and light control, drapes are the better choice. Plus, with their heavier and longer fabric, drapes block light and absorb sound. Also, think about each treatment’s installation needs: curtains can hang on either a tension rod or a regular rod, but drapes can only hang from a regular rod because of their weight.

Cleaning

Most curtains are machine-washable, which makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze. On the other hand, drapery requires professional cleaning, which means a bit more effort than curtains. No matter your choice, curtains or drapes, the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ offers a wide array of fabrics and hardware to create your unique look at your window.
